Views of Antiquity in the Qing Imperial Palace: Special Exhibition to Celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Palace Museum
    Until 19 March 2006
To mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Palace Museum, this exhibition, in collaboration with the Palace Museum, the Macao Foundation, the Macao Government Tourism Office and Macao Daily News, features 120 precious cultural relics from the Palace Museum. The exhibits are classified into nine sections under four major categories: bronze wares, paintings and calligraphy, potteries and handicrafts of jade, lacquer, enamel, carvings of wood and bamboo, gourd wares and ink stones. Through the display of the relics, the organizers wish to accentuate the uniqueness in the creative concepts present in traditional Chinese arts. Innovations of traditional arts are often made through replicating antiquities. The exhibition also extols the praiseworthy merits and devotedness of the fellow workers of the Palace Museum in succeeding and exalting the traditional cultures through shouldering heavy responsibilities during the last eighty years.

Brush and Ink: The Chinese Art of Writing
    September 2, 2006-January 21, 2007
This installation will trace the 1,600-year history of brush writing from its genesis as a fine art in the 4th century A.D., through successive peaks of individual innovation, to its recent transformation from a universal mark of scholarly status into a form of abstract art. It will feature more than 70 works, with examples from the permanent collection importantly augmented by select works from private collections. →Exhibition's list

    The Four Seasons
    January 28, 2006-August 13, 2006
Galleries for Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, 2nd floor, north wing
Chinese art explores both the transient and the eternal aspects of the natural world and sees in both the beauty and poignancy of the human condition. Narrative paintings present didactic and poetic chronicles of the agricultural calendar. Landscapes not only evoke atmospheric conditions and times of day, but also convey a particular mood or political commentary: a vernal scene may symbolize the flourishing conditions of a well-ordered state; a winterscape may imply conditions that are hostile to virtue and talent. Flower paintings serve as seasonal markers but also as emblems of specific virtues. As seen in these poetic works from the Museum's collection, artists imbued nature with rich layers of personal and cultural significance.

Chinese Painting and Calligraphy from the Wang-go Weng Collection
    3 March - 1 August 2007
Perhaps the last great collection of Chinese painting and calligraphy still in the possession of the original family, the Weng family collection is remarkable for its superb quality, fine condition, and well-documented provenance. This exhibition will present about thirty-five rarely seen masterworks of Chinese painting and calligraphy, enriched by historical photographs, manuscripts, and personal objects of the collector Weng Tonghe 翁同和. A series of films will highlight the life of Weng's grandson, the accomplished poet, painter, film-maker, historian and art-historian Wan-go Weng 翁萬戈.

    Part2: June 27-September 17, 2006
Accumulated over three generations, the Yeh 葉(葉公超等) family collection is a treasure trove of Chinese painting and calligraphy dating as far back as the seventh century. Presented in two eight-week installations, The Elegant Gathering features eighty superb examples of Chinese painting and calligraphy dating as far back as the seventh century-all selected from the Yeh Family Collection, an extraordinary set of artworks assembled by three generations of a prominent Cantonese family and donated to the Asian Art Museum in 2003. The collection is strong in calligraphy, considered the premier visual art of China's educated elite, and it includes a number of important paintings by leading artists of the early and mid-twentieth century.

    International Symposium: Bridges to Heaven:
A Symposium on East Asian Art in Honor of Professor 方聞
    P. Y. and Kinmay W. Tang Center for East Asian Art, Princeton University
    1 - 2 April 2006
Organized by the P. Y. and Kinmay W. Tang Center for East Asian Art with support from The Blakemore Foundation, and co-sponsored with the Princeton University Art Museum and the Department of Art and Archaeology. This symposium will feature fifteen paper presentations, and a related festschrift publication to follow will include about forty papers by Professor Fong's students and several of his colleagues. Both will honour Wen Fong(方聞)'s 45 years of teaching at Princeton, his years of leadership at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and his unsurpassed impact on the field of Asian art history. The main title of the symposium and of the subsequent publication, `Bridges to Heaven,' pays homage to Wen Fong's pioneering dissertation and to the resulting publication, entitled The Lohans and a Bridge to Heaven (1958). Many of Wen Fong's students in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean art history will present new research that has been deeply influenced intellectually and methodologically by his teaching and has ventured `across many bridges,' linking art history with a multitude of other disciplines, including literature, political and social history, religion, anthropology, and geography.

    Reopened: Far Eastern Galleries
Three major installation and restoration projects were scheduled last summer in preparation for the new wing for Far Eastern art and archaeology. Chinese artisans will reconstruct a corner of a 17th century Chinese palace, the great Ming Tomb will be relocated to a gallery devoted to Chinese architecture, and ROM conservators will restore a rare late 13th century Buddhist Temple wall painting. `These three large artifacts are significant in the ROM's outstanding Chinese collection, which ranks among the best outside of China. The addition of the reconstructed palace is a unique opportunity for the public to view such architecture built using traditional methods,' said Klaas Ruitenbeek, coordinating curator of the Far Eastern galleries. `These spectacular pieces are among the 2,400 fine objects to be displayed in the reconceived Chinese galleries.'
